We are living in a fast-paced world, and it is more important than ever to have an outlet that allows us to “de-stress” from the demands of daily life. Taking the stress out of life, if we allow ourselves the opportunities to do that, can happen in a number of ways. For some of us, this comes in the form of a hobby or an activity that nourishes the soul with positivity and creativity. Anything that eases our pressures and gives us a chance to breathe or takes us out of the rat race and rut of “doing” is healthy for us. Activities come in many shapes and sizes: from collecting postage stamps to creating one-of-a-kind crafts, to physical activity, reading, doing puzzles, or simply doing nothing. We do not always have to be busy. The enjoyment of relaxing and getting our minds focused on comforting activities is beneficial to all of us.
For those of us who still come into the office five days a week or more, having a hobby or an enjoyable activity that is just for us is very special, but finding the time to do it is easier said than done. Aside from being my daily form of exercise, taking walks with my four-legged friend, Abbie, is stress free for me. It helps clear my mind and gives me the opportunity to take in the outdoors. The same is true for the pleasure I find in planting flowers and watching them grow and display beautiful colors. Tending to my garden, although it is very small, and taking in the fresh air and feeling the dirt between my fingers brings me incredible comfort and relaxation.
In this issue of Lifetime Living, you will meet several Morningside residents and talented activity directors as they share details of their favorite hobbies and “do it yourself” crafts. Their insight is proof that it is never too early or too late in life to have an interest and pursue it. Studies continue to show that hobbies and enjoyable activities bring good health, happiness and positive thinking and outlook. I encourage you to take advantage of the beautiful spring season. Let yourself go, and let your creativity flow.
