Volunteers from marketing consulting agency MOOD: Texas laughed, sang and shared heartfelt conversations with residents of Cibolo House Memory Care – a community of Morningside Ministries Senior Living Communities – during a visit on June 14 as part of their newly formed volunteer program at the memory care community in Boerne, Texas.
Eight volunteers from MOOD: Texas visited the community to spend time with the residents and to engage with them during their daily MUSIC & MEMORY session to better understand the positive effects music can have on minds that have been affected by dementia.
This new volunteer program is an outcome of MOOD: Texas’s partnership with the MUSIC & MEMORY program at Cibolo House Memory Care. MUSIC & MEMORY is a national non-profit program that allows memory care residents living in senior living communities the opportunity to listen to their favorite music daily in order to help them relax and recall forgotten memories. Cibolo House became a certified MUSIC & MEMORY facility in August 2015 and to date, all memory care residents have their own iPods, headphones and personalized music playlists.
In April, MOOD: Texas made a generous $2,500 donation towards the MUSIC & MEMORY program to further expand the program in the community and allow for the purchase of more personalized music playlists, headphones and iPod music playe.
Regional Sales Director of MOOD: Texas Robyn Mercer shared that spending time with the residents left many of the volunteers touched and reflective as they drove home that afternoon.
“It was touching to be able to look into (residents’ eyes and see them light up when they hear the music,” Mercer said. “I think just the interaction and the energy, the fact that they’ll talk about our earrings or necklaces and… just genuine conversation was just as beneficial for us as maybe them.
“I think it’s only going to get bigger and better after today, I really do,” Mercer shared about the MOOD: Texas MUSIC & MEMORY volunteer program.
