Duane Manning, one of our new chaplains filling the shoes of recently retired Chaplain Dennis Smith at Menger Springs, is no stranger to Morningside Ministries. He and his wife Jackie are residents at Morningside and live in a lovely Cottage on our Boerne campus. His parents, Bob and Shirley, also live just a stone’s throw away at Cibolo House. Before moving to our community last March, Chaplain Duane had led Vesper services at Menger Springs representing St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Boerne since around 2010. He had been encouraged to consider moving to our community by a friend whose father was one of the first residents to move to Menger Springs back in 2004.
Chaplain Duane was born in Rochester, New York on July 3, 1960. He grew up in Waterloo, Illinois, and graduated from High School in LaPorte Indiana. He enlisted in the Air Force after graduation and spent 21 years enjoying assignments around the world. It was during this time he met his wife Jackie at Shanute Air Force Base, with their military journey eventually leading them to San Antonio in 1994.
Duane retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1999. He began his ministry calling in 2012 when Mission Presbytery offered a two-year training program to prepare Lay people for the ministry. In 2017, Jane Graham, former Menger Springs resident, asked Duane if he would be willing to “help her little church in Pipe Creek?” Duane agreed that he would help Jane’s church and became the Pastor of Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church (PCPC). Duane will leave PCPC on April 1st to focus his energy and enthusiasm caring for everyone at Morningside at Menger Springs. Beyond his duties as a chaplain, Duane is an avid golfer, though he humbly admits he’s far from being a professional. Duane and Jackie have been married since 1986. They don’t have any children or pets, although they delight in the company of everyone and their beloved pets at Morningside. They love to travel and are thrilled to live at Menger Springs!
