Morningside Ministries boasts a remarkable group of artists who discovered their affinity for painting well into their elder years.
One such artist is Henrietta Zavala, who is set to celebrate her 102nd birthday in July. Remarkably, Henrietta had never explored the world of art until she arrived at Morningside at the Manor just two years ago, at the age of 100.
Born in 1922 in Waelder, Texas, Henrietta spent her early years going to school in San Antonio and Monterrey, Mexico. Her family ran a grocery store and meat market in downtown San Antonio and helped support her pursuit of a career in hairstyling. She graduated from beauty school and later found success at a prestigious salon near the iconic Menger Hotel. It was here that she forged lifelong friendships while honing her craft.
For over three decades, Henrietta called the King William neighborhood home, living alongside her beloved family and eventually starting a family and raising her son. She subsequently enjoyed 37 years of independence in a charming house on Huisache Street in Woodlawn. However, a fall resulting in a hip injury prompted her transition to Morningside at the Manor, with Henrietta recognizing the evolving need for support as she gracefully navigated her golden years.
Embracing her newfound home, she has formed close bonds with fellow residents, including Barbara, Alma, and Wanda, and enjoys arts and crafts activities under the guidance of Life Enrichment Director Patty Mendoza. As a centenarian, she also began participating in scheduled art classes led by instructor Pamela Henry and created her first paintings. Her preferred medium is watercolor, where she captures the beauty of animals, particularly birds and cats. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Henrietta finds joy in various hobbies, including sewing and reading. Her journey serves as a testament to the enduring power of creativity and resilience, inspiring others to embrace new passions and opportunities regardless of age.
