For National CNA Week (June 13 – June 19, 2024), we spotlighted Ofelia Barboza, a much beloved team member by residents and her colleagues at Morningside at The Manor. For the past 20 years, Ofelia has dedicated herself to providing exceptional care in her career as a CNA. Ofelia’s journey as a CNA began in 1998 when she moved from San Luis, Potosi, to San Antonio, Texas, where she received her training, and which she now considers her hometown. After obtaining her CNA certification from Texas Careers, she worked for two other agencies before finding her forever job at Morningside in 2008.
Ofelia has spent 16 years at Morningside, a place she fondly describes as her best workplace due to the comprehensive support and resources provided for resident care. “The best place for me is Morningside,” she says, reflecting on her long and fulfilling career. Ofelia appreciates the kindness and support of the Directors of Nursing (DONs) and Assistant Directors of Nursing (ADONs) she has worked with during her time at Morningside, noting how their leadership has made her job enjoyable and rewarding.
Cristy Flores, her DON, speaks highly of Ofelia’s impact, saying, “Some of our residents get so sad when Ofelia isn’t here and wait for her.” This sentiment is echoed by the residents themselves, like Mr. C, who was notably upset when Ofelia was off in the morning but brightened up upon seeing her in the afternoon.
Ofelia’s love for her work is evident in her daily interactions with residents. She enjoys talking with them, assisting with daily activities, and even singing to brighten their days. Her dedication has made her a beloved figure at Morningside.
In her personal life, Ofelia has been happily married to her husband Jose for 25 years. They have two sons, Jose Maria and Victor, who have blessed them with four grand “furbabies.” At home, Ofelia enjoys the company of her two dogs, Princess, a Chihuahua, and Katrina, a mixed pug and Chihuahua. To stay fit, she goes on long walks on trails near her home.
Ofelia’s long-time coworker and friend, Gloria, has been by her side for over a decade, making their work environment even more special. As Ofelia nears retirement at 65, she looks back with pride and joy at her time at Morningside, grateful for the experiences and relationships she has built.
Thank you, Ofelia, for your unwavering dedication and the love you bring to Morningside every day.
