If you’ve spent any time at Morningside at Menger Springs, chances are you know Carol Dudley. A true β€œpeople person,” Carol has called Menger Springs home for the past eight years and currently serves as Resident Council President. She loves being involved in the community, though she admits she looks forward to one day joining events simply as a participant. Until then, she’s proud to represent her neighbors and help keep the community connected.

Carol first signed up to live at the Overlook building even before it was built. While she waited for construction to finish, she bought a home in Boerne just north of Johns Road. Two years later, she happily moved into the Overlook and traded the responsibilities of homeownership for a beautiful apartment overlooking the Hill Country. With her sweeping balcony views, she enjoys sitting outside at all times of the day, soaking in the peaceful scenery.

Born in Los Angeles in 1945 while her father was in medical school, Carol was raised in Lubbock, Texas, alongside her three brothers and sister. As a youth, she spent ten years studying ballet under a strict Russian teacher, which taught her discipline, and she also loved sports and music. When her youngest brother was born during her senior year of high school, Carol and her sister cared for him as though he were their own baby doll.

The summer after graduating high school in 1964, Carol married Ronnie, a young man she met on a blind date who attended the other high school in Lubbock. They welcomed two sons, Todd in 1965 and Bryan in 1966, who grew up close not only to each other but also to Carol’s youngest brother, who was similar in age. Tragically, in 1967, Carol and Ronnie were in a serious car accident that took Ronnie’s life. Carol, who was left critically injured with a crushed pelvis and multiple broken bones, was in a coma before waking to the devastating news that she was now a widow with two very young children. She and her boys moved in with her parents while she recovered and began the difficult journey of moving forward.

Two years later, Carol met Morris Dudley, the man who would become her second husband, through church. Morris was the Activities Director at First Methodist Church and taught a sailing class Carol decided to join. One afternoon after class, Carol’s three-year-old son spotted Morris by the water and called out, β€œYou want to get hamburgers with us?” That spontaneous McDonald’s outing became their first date. Six months later, they married. At the wedding, little Todd asked if he could finally call Morris β€œDaddy,” a moment that touched Carol deeply. Morris embraced fatherhood wholeheartedly, and he even sold his sailboat to formally adopt Bryan and Todd.

Carol and Morris began their married life in Corpus Christi, where he worked as a landscape architect for the Parks & Recreation Department. When Carol became pregnant with their daughter, Michelle, she returned to Lubbock so that her father could deliver the baby. After living in Corpus for three years, the family later moved to San Antonio when Morris accepted another Parks & Recreation position, and eventually he launched his own business, Morris Dudley, Landscape Architect, with Carol assisting with the bookkeeping. They lived in San Antonio for 20 years, raising their children until all three graduated from Roosevelt High School.

Once they became empty nesters, Carol and Morris set out to fulfill their dream of country living. In 1993, they purchased 40 acres in Waring, Texas, and began creating their beloved farm, Halleluia Trail. While living in a trailer on the property, they worked together to build their farmhouse, which featured a steep roofline, two levels, a large living area, several bedrooms, and a spacious craft room for Carol. In time, they added a beautiful wraparound porch that became the heart of family gatherings during the holidays.

The property also featured a rock-and-fiberglass pump house that Carol designed and built herself. Together, she and Morris cultivated a thriving vegetable garden, raised miniature horses, and created a warm, welcoming home. After Morris’s passing, Carol eventually sold the farm and moved to Boerne, later settling at Morningside at Menger Springs. Her daughter, Michelle, also moved to Boerne from San Antonio but sadly passed away four years ago.

Here at Menger Springs, Carol has thrived socially and has been elected Resident Council President twice. She takes her role seriously, staying involved and informed about community life, while also cherishing the many friendships she has made. Outside of Menger Springs, Carol remains active in the Boerne community. She attends First Baptist Church, where she has taught Sunday school, and enjoys spending time with her family. Several of her family members live nearby: two brothers and their wives in Round Rock and Austin, another brother and sister-in-law in San Antonio, her son Todd in Dallas, and her son Bryan in Houston. Her sister in Pennsylvania makes a special visit each year. Carol is also proud to be a grandmother to seven grandchildren, a great-grandmother to five, with another great-grandchild on the way. She looks forward to celebrating her milestone 80th birthday this October surrounded by her loved ones.

For Carol, life at Menger Springs is filled with friendships, community involvement, and the joy of family nearby. She has experienced both great tragedy and great love, and her resilience, warmth, and leadership continue to inspire those around her.
