For more than three decades, Todd Mackenzie has committed his career to one simple idea: when older adults are treated with dignity, compassion, and genuine human connection, everything else falls into place. This belief has guided him from his earliest days in long-term care to his most recent role as Executive Director and Austin Market Leader for Brookdale Senior Living®, where he oversaw two Brookdale communities including Brookdale Lakeway and Brookdale Westlake Hills.
Todd’s leadership journey didn’t begin in a boardroom. It began in the day-to-day rhythms of senior living — listening to residents’ stories, helping families navigate difficult decisions, and leading teams through the challenges that shape meaningful care. These experiences shaped his understanding that great senior living is built not only on strong operations, but on heart.
Before joining Brookdale, Todd spent five years helping build Remington Medical Resorts, opening its very first rehabilitation facility in San Antonio and later serving as CEO in Dallas. Earlier in his career, he led Deer Creek of Wimberley for 11 years, guiding a struggling nursing facility to become a thriving and respected part of the community. It’s work he still looks back on with pride.
Throughout his career, Todd’s dedication has been recognized by his peers. He was honored as Texas Health Care Association Administrator of the Year and named an American Health Care Association Future Leader of America — acknowledgments that reflect not just his operational skill, but his character and commitment to the field.
Todd has also poured his experience into the next generation of leaders. Since 2004, he has taught as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Texas State University–San Marcos, and in 2014 he became the Coordinator of the University’s Long Term Care Administration Graduate Certificate program. Mentoring students is one of the parts of his work he treasures most.
At the heart of Todd’s professional story is a deep respect for the people he serves — residents, families, teams, and communities. Whether guiding major Austin communities like Brookdale Lakeway and Brookdale Westlake Hills or standing beside a family on a difficult day, Todd’s mission has always remained the same: to make senior living not only better, but truly meaningful.
